The Earth as a Black Hole
Suppose that we want to make a Black Hole out of the whole Earth.
Here are the data needed to do it:
M |
Mass of the earth |
5.98 x 1024 kg |
G |
Gravitational constant |
6.670 x 10-11 m/(kg.s2) |
c |
Speed of light in vacuum |
2.99793 x 108 m/s |
The Schwarzschild radius of the earth is calculated to be:
RSch = 2.G.M/c2 = 8.876 mm
The smallest, yet stable (!) body that corresponds with this has the slightly
larger radius:
r = 9 / 8 . RSch = 9.985 mm ≈ 1 cm !
